This is an old Sanskrit mantra that depicts the host-guest relationship in India. It means a guest (Atithi) is regarded as a dev (God).
Despite major transformations that the country has gone through, the ancient Indian culture that welcomes guests as Gods is still alive, somehow, somewhere. Atithi or guest used to be a welcomed person and his needs were superior for the host. While the concept exists even in modern India, living here as an expat gives a completely different experience.
